How To Make Large Canvas Art
Image resizing and stretching images are some of the most commonly performed functions on photos, especially you have many photos and love to share them with friends, you often have to resize the picture accordingly. It is also becoming increasingly common to have photographs reproduced as a 5 piece canvas print – with many online retailers offering a complete service so that all you have to do is send them your pictures and they’ll do the rest.
Sometimes if there is an image which you need printed on a 5 panel canvas set or something similar and you wish to blow up an image to a large size then you need to stretch it. However, while stretching an image like this, or while resizing an image as indicated above, care needs to be taken to ensure that the image does not get distorted and does not deteriorate in quality significantly.
To ensure that your photo won’t appear pixilated when enlarged it is preferable to take the photographs in as high a resolution as your camera will allow. The print quality is measured in dots per inch (dpi) which, for a standard 14” by 20” picture printed at 200 dpi works out at 2800 x 4000. Therefore you would need a 10 megapixel camera or better which is fairly common nowadays. This serves to highlight the incredible quality available on the market today – although we may take much canvas art for granted it’s not as easy to make at home as you would think.
For high quality, large canvas prints the industry standard is 300 dpi which obviously leads to demand for higher resolution photographs that most of us could not reasonably achieve. Once the image is stretched beyond 20" by 32” only high-end camera equipment can produce the resolution required – sometimes over 30 mega-pixels. For larger prints such as 5 panel canvas sets the only choice is to go to the professionals – a good online retailer can stretch the image up to 48” by 96” with little or no loss in image quality.
